“To be frank, after years of experiencing a left-leaning radical fine art education, I personally felt some tight-lipped uneasiness when confronted with, well, paintings that are simply nice to look at. But to take a step further, works like Christine’s represent a hopeful transformation of energy from something troubled, into something serene.”
“A Flight into Fairyland Darkness: The Art of Christine Bay” by Plural Art Magazine
Christine R. Bay describes her work and creative process:
“Blissfully Oblivious (目珠貼郵票)” is a mixed media (Chrome Acrylic spray paint and oils on stretched canvas) piece painted in 2024. This painting is inspired by our local Hokkien Singlish slang term ‘Bak Chiu Tak Stamp’, which literally means ‘covering the eyes with stamps’. This is a term often used to chide the listener that they are being oblivious to or ignorant of a certain situation. For this piece, however, I want to bring forward a sense of clear headspace and relief from being constantly bombarded and getting overstimulated by the perpetually worsening world news since the pandemic days. The ability to tune out these noises occasionally to prevent mental burnout is just as important as advocating for healing the world and humanity.”
